Biography
Emmily Scumaci is a fine art photographer based in Orland Hills, IL, who is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and a minor in communications with a concentration in journalism at Bradley University. Her passion stems from images’ ability to transcend time and serve as memories of events long after oral histories fade. Emmily has experience in travel, event, newborn, and self-portrait photography. Her work consists of facing issues of eating disorders, anxiety, and the underappreciation of blue-collar workers. Emmily has also combined the art of book-making with her photography for an impactful connection with viewers as they can not solely see the work, but feel it, too. She has been granted the Mendez and Kittle-Kamp Families Endowed Scholarship as well as the annual Art Scholarship provided by Bradley University. Emmily’s work has been featured at the Heuser Gallery and the Peoria Art Guild for her undergraduate and thesis exhibitions, respectively.
Artist's Statement
“Where You’ll Find Me” continues the personal essay I wrote four years ago for my college applications. At the time, I often daydreamed about what it would be like to travel abroad. When the opportunity of a lifetime arose for me to have this experience, I knew I wanted to document my experience through the lens of an artist. Using my DSLR, I capture images of architecture and landscapes in my travels that evoke a profound sense of success and insignificance. Though these emotions may seem contradictory, there is often something larger or deeper in the composition that pulls me in—something I may not fully understand in the moment but come to appreciate after reflecting on the image. Often, it is larger-scale subjects that provoke a sense of unimportance that helps me put my thoughts into perspective. I print the images the size of postcards and write poems on the back like one would a real postcard, describing the emotions the image is meant to evoke. I hope these images inspire others to travel and find pieces of themselves around the world as I have. By combining the art of bookmaking with photography, I create a longer-lasting connection with viewers, allowing them to both see and feel the work. This level of interaction fosters a deeper interest and encourages viewers to explore these places for themselves. This work will continue to expand as I travel because I am far from satisfied with the small taste of the world I have experienced thus far.
